The Debt Management Program itself has no direct effect on your credit score. The factors that damage your credit score are a history of late and missed payments, charge-offs, bankruptcies, accounts getting closed and court judgments filed against you. Some lenders may view you as too risky to merit approval of a new loan. Other lenders might see that you are taking responsibility for your actions and deem you an acceptable risk and approve your loan. When you complete the debt management program, any notation about credit counseling should be removed from your credit report.

Remember, the goal of a Debt Management Plan is to help you pay down your debt in the quickest and most efficient way possible. In order to do that, it is wise to include all of your unsecured accounts on the program.

Also, some creditors require that you include all of your accounts in the program.

No. All payments must be made through the Debt Management Program once you join. Payments made directly to the creditors could be viewed as a termination from the program by the creditor and would likely result in an increase in the interest rates and loss of benefits.

However, you may pay extra on your accounts above your regular Debt Management Program payment. These payments would need to be in money order form and would be sent directly to the processing company who would disburse the funds for you.

A monthly statement from your Debt Management Program will be issued and you will continue to receive regular balance statements directly from your creditors. It is important to cross-reference each statement for accuracy. This keeps you in the loop, so that you can track where every penny goes.
